Centre for Legal Justice

Lawyers help individuals, businesses, and organizations navigate complex legal systems and procedures.

Welcome to Centre for Legal Justice (CFLJ)

We are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) committed to providing legal aid, advocacy, and public legal education to underserved communities across East Africa, with urgent focus on the Republic of South Sudan. Through legal representation, policy reform initiatives, and rehabilitation support, we work to empower vulnerable individuals, including detainees, survivors of violence, and those without access to justice.

Imprisonment for Civil Debt

Case: Joseph, a young farmer, was imprisoned for unpaid rent. No legal representation was available.
Our Intervention: CFLJ provided legal aid and negotiated release through advocacy and repayment plan support.
Why It Matters: Debt-related imprisonment perpetuates poverty and violates basic rights.

Rape Survivors Seeking Justice

Case:Mary (name changed), 17, was assaulted in a remote village. Police refused to take action.
Our Intervention: CFLJ arranged legal counsel, medical referrals, and community protection.
Why It Matters:Survivors need holistic support, including justice and healing.

Detained Without Trial

Case:Dozens of individuals held in pre-trial detention without formal charges or representation.
Our Intervention: CFLJ deployed volunteer lawyers to secure bail and track case status.
Why It Matters: Pre-trial detention without representation is a human rights violation..

Justice in Action

Our work targets urgent, high-impact legal needs — supporting individuals who are often overlooked or neglected by the justice system.

Legal Structure & Governance

Choosing the right lawyer is crucial for receiving reliable legal advice and achieving justice.

Centre for Legal Justice CIC is a UK-registered Community Interest Company limited by guarantee, operating as a not-for-profit with a community benefit purpose. Our activities are governed by:

  • The Companies Act 2006 (UK)
  • Community Interest Company Regulations
  • Our own Articles of Association, approved by the CIC Regulator

Our Constitution Includes:

  • Asset lock to ensure all funds are used for public benefit
  • No profit distribution to members or directors
  • Clear objectives focused on access to justice, education, and vulnerable group support
  • Commitment to reinvesting all surplus into community-based legal services

We are working toward full charitable status and will remain legally and ethically bound to our public benefit mission.

Trial Advocates

At the Centre for Legal Justice CIC, representation at trial is a core service provided to individuals who face criminal or civil proceedings without the means to secure legal counsel. Our advocates intervene to ensure fair trial rights are upheld, offering courtroom advocacy, pre-trial preparation, and post-trial follow-up, particularly in cases involving vulnerable persons such as detainees, survivors of violence, or those accused without legal representation. This commitment helps prevent miscarriages of justice, promotes legal accountability, and restores dignity to those often excluded from formal legal processes.
